Story of Mary

Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, holds a unique and exalted role in Christianity as the Mother of God. She is revered for her humility, obedience, and unwavering faith. Her life is a testament to her deep devotion and her pivotal role in God's plan for salvation.

Her Parents and Birth

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was born to Joachim and Anne, a devout Jewish couple from the line of King David. According to tradition, Joachim and Anne were childless for many years and fervently prayed for a child. God answered their prayers, and Mary was conceived miraculously. From the very beginning, she was graced by God, free from original sin, in what is known as the Immaculate Conception. Mary's birth was celebrated with great joy, as her parents dedicated her to the service of God. She grew up in Nazareth, a humble and quiet town, learning faith and devotion from her pious parents.

Mary's Childhood and Dedication to God

Tradition holds that Mary was presented to the Temple at a young age, where she grew in wisdom and faith under the care of the priests and other consecrated women. She lived a life of prayer, purity, and devotion, preparing for God's plans for her life. Even at a young age, Mary displayed remarkable virtue, humility, and obedience.

The Annunciation

Mary's life changed forever when the Angel Gabriel appeared to her in Nazareth. Gabriel greeted her, saying Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you! (Luke 1:28). He revealed to her that she had been chosen by God to bear His Son, the Savior of the world. Though initially troubled by the angel's message, Mary listened with faith.
When Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and that her Son would be the long-awaited Messiah, Mary humbly accepted God's will, responding, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38)

The Visitation

After the Annunciation, Mary traveled to the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was also miraculously pregnant with John the Baptist. Upon Mary's arrival, Elizabeth exclaimed, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! .( Luke 1:42) Mary, filled with joy and the Holy Spirit, proclaimed her Magnificat, a song of praise and thanksgiving to God.

Mary and the Birth of Jesus

Mary and Joseph, her betrothed husband, traveled to Bethlehem for a Roman census. Finding no room at the inn, Mary gave birth to Jesus in a humble stable, laying Him in a manger. The birth of Christ was announced by angels to shepherds and later by a star to the Magi. Mary treasured all these moments in her heart, reflecting on the mystery of her child.

Mary During Jesus' Ministry

As Jesus began His public ministry, Mary was a silent but supportive presence. At the wedding at Cana, she played a pivotal role in His first miracle. Noticing the lack of wine, she told the servants, Do whatever He tells you (John 2:5). Her faith and intercession led Jesus to transform water into wine, revealing His divine power.
Mary's maternal concern and unwavering faith were evident throughout Jesus' ministry. Though she did not always fully understand His mission, she trusted God's plan.

Mary at the Foot of the Cross

Mary's greatest trial came during Jesus' Passion and crucifixion. She stood at the foot of the Cross, witnessing her Son's suffering and death. Despite her immense sorrow, she remained faithful, offering her pain in unity with Jesus' sacrifice.
From the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to the care of His beloved disciple, John, saying, “Woman, behold your son!” and to John, Behold your mother (John 19:26-27). In this moment, Mary became the spiritual mother of all believers.

The Assumption and Coronation

After Jesus' resurrection and ascension, Mary continued to support the early Church, praying with the apostles and disciples. According to tradition, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed into heaven, body and soul. There, she was crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth, honored as the Mother of God and the Church.

Mary's Legacy

Mary is venerated as the model of perfect faith, obedience, and love. She is a powerful intercessor and guide for Christians, always leading them closer to her Son, Jesus. Her titles, such as Our Lady of Sorrows, Queen of Heaven, and Star of the Sea, reflect her many roles in the Church and in the lives of the faithful.

Mary's Role in Jesus' childhood

Mary nurtured and cared for Jesus as He grew in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man (Luke 2:52). Along with Joseph, she faithfully observed Jewish traditions, including presenting Jesus in the Temple and participating in festivals. When Jesus was 12, He stayed behind in the Temple to discuss with the teachers. Though anxious when they found Him, Mary lovingly pondered His words: Did you not know that i must be in my Father's house? (Luke 2:49).
